Euro Bus Expo 2016 previews its Master Class Theatre line-up

The Bus Services Bill, Brexit, devolution, and smart ticketing – some of the biggest challenges facing the bus and coach sector – will feature prominently in Euro Bus Expo’s 2016 Master Class Theatre programme.

Taking place at the NEC Birmingham on 1-3 November, the show’s speaker line-up already includes leading industry players like Mark Fowles, MD of Nottingham City Transport (NCT), Jeff Counsell, MD of Midlands-based coach and bus operator trentbarton, and Martijn Gilbert, CEO of Reading Buses.

As in previous years, big names from the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) – the UK’s operator trade body – will also be hosting presentations.

Partnership, marketing & talent

Mark Fowles, head of NCT since 2001, will be joined by John Birtwistle, CPT president and head of policy at FirstGroup UK's Bus Division, to discuss ‘Making partnerships work’ at 11am on opening day (Tuesday, 1 November).

NCT and Reading Buses are award-winning examples of how strong and successful partnerships between operators and local authorities can provide high quality bus services, improve frequency, achieve great customer satisfaction levels[1] and help increase passenger numbers dramatically.

Jeff Counsell, MD of trentbarton, one of the most successful bus companies in the East Midlands will be at the show on day two (2 November) discussing how ‘Marketing your business effectively’ can reap long-term rewards.  Known for its striking bus branding and design, trentbarton’s marketing campaigns, digital engagement and passenger reward incentives reflect its ongoing commitment to put customers ‘at the heart of every decision, every change and every innovation’.

Discussing ‘Attracting the best talent’ is a bold undertaking for any operator.  But if anyone’s in a position to give advice, it’s Martijn Gilbert, CEO of Reading Buses (speaking on 2 November).  Last year, the company secured four gold UK Bus Awards, including UK Bus Operator of the Year and Top Shire Operator, and won the routeONE Award for Operator Training.

Gilbert, who joined Reading Buses in 2014, will be sharing some of the initiatives that Reading Buses uses to engage, retain and develop its staff – from the introduction of ‘Improvement Champions’ across the business to ‘more casual’ uniforms to a mission statement that reflects the views of the entire 550-strong workforce.

“The seminars at the Master Class Theatre offer the ideal way to keep in touch with the industry and find out more about the latest legislation, business developments and innovations happening right now.  It’s the best opportunity of the year to hear firsthand what other operators are doing – what works and what doesn’t, what can work and what can’t,” says event director Helen Conway.

“Euro Bus Expo is the number one place to find the solutions to the challenges [in your business] that you don’t yet know exist,” said Leon Daniels, Transport for London’s Director of Surface Transport.  He opened the show in 2014, and is back for 2016 hosting a Keynote session (on 2 November) outlining his views on 'Future prospects for buses and coaches in London'.

Highlights also include a Bus Services Bill presentation (with Q&A), plus sessions by The Royal Mint, ATCO, and Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership.  Steven Salmon, CPT director of policy development, will be talking about ‘Life after the referendum’ and the potential legislative issues ahead, while ‘The role of bus and coach operators in the new devolved structures’ is the hot topic for the show’s lively panel discussion; chaired by Lynda Waltho, area director for Midlands CPT.

Euro Bus Expo reveals its initial exhibitor list for 2016

Euro Bus Expo 2016 – the essential European showcase for the bus and coach industry, returns to the NEC Birmingham on 1-3 November with its biggest edition yet.

Supported by the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) trade association, the free-to-attend three day biennial event will feature nearly 300 sector leading exhibitors representing every link of the supply chain – from the latest ‘must have’ vehicles (over 100 will be on display), vehicle interiors, accessories and workshop equipment, to IT solutions, training, legislation updates, and essential business services.  Over 9,500 key industry buyers and decision makers from across Europe are expected to attend.

“Euro Bus Expo is the number one place to find the solutions to the challenges [in your business] that you don’t yet know exist,” said Leon Daniels, Transport for London’s Director of Surface Transport, who opened the 2014 show.

Building on the success of its last show – which enjoyed a wealth of positive feedback, an increase in visitors, and saw a record number of multi-million pound business deals being done across the show floor – exhibition space has been selling at an unprecedented rate for 2016.  Eight months out from doors opening, the autumn show is already 96% sold out.  Event organiser, Diversified Communications UK, considers the strong exhibitor uptake as a clear sign that the public transport sector has now turned the corner of the recession and is going from strength to strength.

New additions to the exhibitor line-up for 2016 include KFS Special Vehicles, Era Elektronik, Aquarius IT, Isafetek, Find My Bus, Total UK, Jactron, Big Change Apps, Kiel Seating, Allison Transmission, Bowmonk, and QUS Adblue.

While Lloyd Morgan Group, MiX Telematics Europe, Gas Bus Alliance, DILAX Systems, Green Urban Technologies, Karcher UK, Distinctive Systems, Scan Coin, Transport Benevolent Fund, Hanover Displays, Lytx Europe, and McKenna Brothers are just a few of the returning companies now confirmed.

The initial 2016 exhibitor list is available to view at www.eurobusxpo.com/exhibitor-list.

Returning show features include the Technology Zone; Outdoor Display Area; and the Accessibility Zone (Accessible Solutions by Rescroft), showcasing the latest vehicles, lifts, ramps, training and safety equipment available to specialist operators and authorities.

Master Class Theatre

Whilst new vehicles and technologies remain a practical draw for many visitors to the show, the comprehensive, free Master Class Theatre is renowned for its high-profile speaker line-up, including technology experts and major coach and bus operators, discussing the key issues, opportunities and hot topics facing the passenger transport sector today.  The 2016 programme will be unveiled over the coming months.

Save the date for 2016

Operators, local authorities, transport specifiers, suppliers and stakeholders are urged to ‘save the date’ for Europe’s biggest coach and bus trade show in 2016.  For more information, and to register interest in attending, please visit www.eurobusxpo.com.

As in previous years, the popular routeONE Awards for coach and bus operator excellence coincides with the show, taking place on the evening of the second day (Wednesday 2 November).  For further information, please visit www.routeoneawards.com.

It will bring together exhibitors in the small vehicle sector to demonstrate the latest equipment and supplies available in this growing sector of the market.

Alongside the exhibition, a full seminar programme in the Master Class Theatre will be a major draw, with top industry speakers. As in previous years, there will be a focus on game-changing technologies and industry developments, backed by real-world commercial applications and case studies – all tailored specifically for operators to help them prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Britain’s coach and bus trade body, the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT) is once again the show partner.

Event director Helen Conway says: “Euro Bus Expo 2018 is off to a flying start and the show is on track to sell-out well before the autumn.  We’ve received tremendous support from across the industry and it’s clear that Euro Bus Expo is seen as a key event for 2018.

“Along with the CPT we remain committed to delivering a quality show over three days, which our audience can be proud of.  Whether you’re looking to purchase new vehicles, upgrade your technology, improve your passengers’ experience or your business efficiency, you’ll find the best of what’s on offer at Euro Bus Expo 2018.

“That’s what makes the show such an exciting and invaluable experience to the thousands of visitors that regularly attend,” she says.

“It’s a tremendous showcase for the advancements being developed by so many of the industry's suppliers and partners.  Not only do these offer support and solutions to operators in these ever challenging times, but most importantly will enable us to meet, and indeed perhaps beat, the expectations of our customers,” says Giles Fearnley, MD of First Group – UK Bus Division.

Euro Bus Expo returns to the NEC in Birmingham on 30 October-1 November 2018.  For further information and to register to attend, please visit www.eurobusxpo.com.

The show is co-located alongside the UK’s largest coach, bus, and minibus operator excellence awards.

The prestigious black-tie routeone Awards takes place on the evening of 31 October at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole’s banqueting suite, on the NEC site.
