In the vibrant and fast-paced environment of trade shows, uplifting diverse voices and empowering speakers to claim their place on the stage is extremely important to us.
Imagine a process that not only supports speakers in entering the spotlight but also guides them through the journey. This is exactly what the Speaker Support Scheme at Digital Construction Week offers. We pair up seasoned speakers with first-time presenters, to offer support and networking opportunities.
Let’s delve into the four-stage process that underpins this initiative, ensuring that every speaker, regardless of background, receives the support they need to shine.
-
Matching: A thoughtful connection
The first stage of the Speaker Support Scheme involves a matching process. Speakers are paired based on their fields of expertise, speaker experience, and sectors. Both the mentor and mentee in each pair will be contacted via email once decisions have been made.
-
Initial conversation: Crafting objectives
A one-hour initial call begins the mentor-mentee journey. During this conversation, mentees talk about their goals and concerns — whether it’s their first time on stage, seeking guidance on presentation creation or delivery, or boosting confidence in public speaking. Mentors, drawing from their experience, provide valuable advice and set the tone for the collaboration.
-
Presentation feedback session: Refining skills
The second call involves the mentee presenting their work, be it a draft presentation or key talking points. The mentor provides constructive feedback during this one-hour session to help finalise and review the mentee’s presentation before hitting the stage.
-
Show day support: A friendly face in the crowd
The final stage of the Speaker Support Scheme involves the mentor being present on the day of the talk. Mentors will be there to greet mentees when they arrive and support with any pre-presentation nerves. They’ll serve as a friendly face in the crowd during the session and offer feedback afterwards.

Things to note
Recognising the potential demand for mentorship, the programme operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, dependent on the availability of mentors.
Mentees should be aware that the programme facilities two hours of the mentor’s time before the show for calls, and to support on the day only. Any additional support required is at the discretion of the mentor.
