In 2011, a few exhibition industry people, led by Chris Hughes and Trevor Foley, and supported by Jeremy Clarkson, founded Events for Namuwongo (E4N), a unique events charity to support and help transform the lives of the inhabitants of the slum community of Namuwongo, in Uganda. It was a desperate place, where up to 30,000 people survived on an average of 20 pence per day, life expectancy was short, and people had lost any hope for a better future.
Over the past five years, individuals and companies within the events industry have helped raise over £500K for Events for Namuwongo, working with the community to facilitate real change – from helping to provide clean water, sanitation, and essential health services, to building a school, funding education, and much more. As a result, Namuwongo is now a very different place to what it was. But the work certainly isn’t over yet.
Many of you will already be aware of the various fundraising activities we’ve held for Events for Namuwongo at many of our shows over the past three years (raising nearly £25,000 so far – thank you!). Like many of our fellow exhibition organisers, we’re committed to continuing to raise more money to help support the next important stage of Namuwongo’s development. In addition, we’re delighted to say that, with the generous backing of our CEO Ted Wirth, our sponsorship of this fantastic charity will also be complemented by a £3,000 contribution per annum over the next three years.
We’ll keep you updated on how you can get involved with our next charity appeal. In the meantime if you’d like to know more about Events for Namuwongo, please visit www.eventsfornamuwongo.com.
