  • HMRC’s MTD-lead Theresa Middleton to give exclusive opening day update

The government’s initiative to digitalise tax kicked into action this month. But with thousands of UK businesses still to sign up for Making Tax Digital for VAT the need to get digital is more pressing than ever.

For companies struggling to choose from the many MTD solutions on offer, Accountex 2019 – Europe’s leading accounting and finance conference and expo – is a must attend. Over 200 companies – from big global brands to cutting-edge start-ups – are preparing to showcase the best of accounting innovation at the show, which takes place next month at London ExCeL on 1-2 May.

Event director Zoe Lacey-Cooper says: “HMRC has released a guide to the MTD software that’s on the market, but with over 250 options to choose from it can be difficult to decide which is right for your business.

“Anyone who’s not yet MTD ready should head to Accountex. The show offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience live product demonstrations from the leading MTD software providers and meet the teams behind the brands. We’ve got all the big names and latest technology when it comes to digital VAT software – MTD products are present across the show floor.

“Plus, we’ve got almost 30 MTD-related seminars taking place in the theatres, including exclusive updates direct from HMRC, to bring you up-to-date with everything you need to know.”

Among the list of HMRC-recognised MTD software providers who will be exhibiting at the show are Access, AccountsIQ, Avalara Europe, bluQube, BTCSoftware, Capium, Clear Books, Easy R & D, Exel Solutions, FreeAgent, HansaWorld, Intuit QuickBooks, IRIS Software Group, JustAccounts, My Digital Accounts, Nolan Business Solutions, Nomisma, Oracle NetSuite, Pandle, QuickFile Accounting Software, Sage UK, Silverfin, Taxfiler, Thomson Reuters, Wolters Kluwer, Xero and Zoho Corporation.

Get to grips with MTD with dedicated seminars
It’s not just exhibitors shining the spotlight on MTD at Accountex 2019 – it’s also a hot topic with this year’s speakers.

Theresa Middleton, HMRC’s director of the Making Tax Digital for Business programme, will be giving a much-anticipated update about the future of MTD in Keynote A, at 11am on Wednesday 1 May.

That’s just one of the many MTD-related seminars that are part of the packed education programme at this year’s show. Other highlights include sessions from HMRC’s Rebecca Hutton (Keynote B, 1pm on 1 May), Verna Gellvear (Tax Theatre, 5pm on 1 May) and Claire Williams (Future Theatre, 11am on 2 May), an MTD update from Thomson Reuters’ tax expert, Mark Purdue (Tax Theatre, 11am on 1 May, and ACCA Theatre, 2pm on 1 May & 11am on 2 May), MTD for VAT and Beyond with IRIS Software’s Jenny Strudwick (Tax Theatre, 10.15am on 2 May), a session on getting set up for MTD from ICAEW’s Caroline Miskin (Keynote A, 11am on 2 May) plus talks by experts from Wolters Kluwer, Xero, Institute of Certified Practising Accountants, Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and more.

Speaking ahead of her session at the show, Jenny Strudwick, senior product manager at IRIS Software says: “Digital tax will continue to be a key trend in 2019. The first postings are due in the summer, so accountancy professionals will still need a robust practice structure, to make sure compliance is right and build advisory services on top of it.”

Accountex returns to London ExCeL on 1-2 May. For further information, and to register for a free ticket to attend, please visit www.accountex.co.uk/london and use priority code ACX103.
